What is the fat bike appeal? We chatted to Jamie at Ride The Alps in Morillon

to find out what it's all about and how to go about booking a trial for this Winter..

A fat bike is a mountain bike with extra fat tyres for riding on terrain

that requires extra traction e.g. snow & ice. It is the most exciting new

winter sport to come to Europe and it's so much fun!

Is it difficult?

If you can ride a normal bike, you can ride a fat bike. For novice riders we

choose relatively flat, non-technical trails. If you're an accomplished

mountain biker, there are some more adventurous, steeper trails to ride.

Do you use the lifts / pistes?

No, fat bikes are not allowed on the lifts or the ski pistes. However, at

the end of the day in the quiet season it is possible to sneak a cheeky run

down ;o) We use pisted hiking trails, away from the crowded ski pistes. In

early season when there is less snow around, we ride the fat bikes on our

usual mountain biking trails.

What equipment do you need is this supplied?

We have the bikes available for hire. We can supply helmets. You need

to wear sturdy walking shoes or boots or winter bike shoes for flat pedals,

all with warm socks. Either wear winter biking gear (thermal tights) or

winter hiking gear. You'll need thermal gloves and sunglasses.

Can anybody try?

Yes, fat biking is suitable for anyone who can ride a bike.

How big a group can you take?

We will have a fleet of 7 bikes so we can take up to 6. It may be possible

to hire 2 more bikes from elsewhere to make the group up to the maximum size

of 8.

What are the costs?

50 euro p.p per half day. 2 minimum in a group.

How do I book? I heard there's a voucher scheme?

Yes, we are selling fat bike vouchers in advance.

A voucher is 50 euro and entitles you to a guided half day fat

bike ride. The vouchers are valid for 3 years from purchase, during the

winter months so if you don't plan to come to Morillon this winter season,

you can use them another year. You can purchase these vouchers directly from

us by emailing info@ridethealps.com or via your chalet host in resort. They are a

perfect unusual birthday or Christmas gift. Let's see some Chalets De Charme

guests flying down the slopes this winter..

We are delighted to welcome Fen and Sam to the Chalets De Charme team for Winter 2015-16 as our new chef and hosts. They are currently travelling around India after working the Summer as chefs for the funky Cafe Dish company...what a nice life!

Fen tells us that at 25 they felt it was time to learn to ski/board and have an adventure, so they left their jobs in Brighton and headed to Meribel for their first season last year - they loved it and caught the bug! Sam is a trained chef with fine dining background and Fen had studied for her undergraduate and masters degrees at Sussex university and then went on to work in a specialist centre for autistic children. They both love travelling, experiencing new things ( especially new food!) and meeting people and can't wait to get back to the mountains this Winter!'
